Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest certain decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
