This Household Personal Game of the Year Awards for This Year
Well, how was the past year in your family? Could it be described as all as good as people post on online? Full of A-grades for the kids and elaborate themed fancy dress celebrations for the adults? Or perhaps it was a ocean of letdowns with only rare fun moments? And was any of it authentic, or are we all seven-fingered synthetic personas with perfect teeth?
I've corralled the family for a chat, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the crucial thing in any given year: which releases we played the most. Without further ado:
Title First Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my definitive list."
On her phone, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I suggested it. Fair enough.
Game Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into acting, but when she wasn’t singing, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her avatar has a successful utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has outside the game.
Title the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Release I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am behaving this way to prepare him so he can be a man and play games for adults. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted deck building digital pastime, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that frequently update their range is you have a moment of clarity and understand it is all just an attempt to lure you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could deal with my issues so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just was short on the focused attention to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after appropriate hospitality.
Game That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was the previous year's breakout game, but I was late to it. And it is exceptional. It just gets each element right. Its gameplay loop is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so imaginative it has become a game I literally would play any time. Combine that with the wittiness of the card design, and this is an definite peak of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a technical issue in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I recognized even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the reader who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I present that in the exact way, because I acknowledge the engagement, and they are obviously an excellent judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult exploration-focused thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". Great fun. I understand that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my adulthood. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names shouted from the garden at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it burns like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
