The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
