The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Detailing His 20 Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book in the coming weeks named Notes from a Cell, which recounts his experience endured in jail.

The revelation came less than two weeks following the former president was released while he appeals his conviction related to unlawful coordination in a case to secure presidential race money from the government of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts

“In prison one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he reflects in a preview, suggesting the book is more about his thoughts from isolation instead of wider commentary of the overcrowded and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing in La Santé, where there is a lot to hear,” he continues. “The noise unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, inner life is fortified while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, the former leader was present by video link from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, showing great humanity, easing this nightmare bearable – because it is a nightmare.”

“It never crossed my mind that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It has an impact every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012, set a precedent as past president from the EU and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to experience jail.

Ahead of his incarceration he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the volumes he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, where a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated but escapes to exact retribution.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was placed in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet including private facilities at the correctional facility in Paris. Guards stayed in an adjacent room.

Reports indicated that he consumed just yogurt during his stay because he feared prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Options were available for self-catering yet he declined, according to reports. It is uncertain if he will detail what he ate in prison.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, informed the court his safety would improve outside jail than inside. “He received death threats, heard shouts during nighttime plus rapid actions in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody on 21 October following the judiciary imposed five years in prison on conspiracy charges over a scheme to obtain political donations for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and is contesting the ruling, and another court case set for the coming spring.
