Schools in northern Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The armed faction invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Community members informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
