Taliban Utilized Left-Behind UK Gear to Track Down Local Nationals Who Worked With Allied Troops, Investigation Learns

A confidential source has disclosed a parliamentary probe that British authorities failed to secure classified technology permitting the militant group to identify local individuals who collaborated with international military.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous in Danger

The source, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to move homes and change their contact details to protect themselves from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are currently examining the Conservative government's response of a massive breach of confidential data concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to come to the UK to avoid the Taliban.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

A spreadsheet including their personal data, comprising identities, addresses and occasionally family information, was inadvertently disclosed by an official employed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The breach came to light months later, when details of multiple applicants who had applied to settle in Britain surfaced on social media.

Regime's Resources

It appears there is a false assumption that the Taliban do not have the same sort of facilities that we have,” she told MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have mobile details, they are able to track you down to within metres. That's precisely what specialized teams did.”

During testimony about if militant forces possessed sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They possess all resources.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Preliminary research presented to the inquiry estimated that at least 49 relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been executed.

A legal restriction concerning the incident was implemented in late 2023 and blocked relevant facts regarding the matter from media reporting until mid-2025.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, Person A and the aid group she collaborated with informed Afghan families they were supporting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“We advised that they change residence if they could and altered their mobile numbers. These represented the crucial data that, should militant forces obtained this information, would result in them being traced,” she said.

Disputed Conclusions

The source argued that an official review carried out by a retired civil servant had been wrong to determine that the obtaining of the dataset by the regime was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not confronting militant forces; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

Person A described disturbing treatment experienced by at-risk Afghans, including electrocution, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.

“Instances include young kids who have had their arms broken to try to get relatives to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
