The most severe projected effects of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by scientists, including a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea levels. A separate possibility envisions a plunge of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and energy needs.
Credible Events, Not Predictions
These effects, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are seen as low probability but credible. The scientists explained that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in planning that had left the UK unprepared for extreme outcomes.
"The climate extremes we have outlined should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," stated the professor who directed the research. "The nation has been formulating policy lacking the frameworks to test against extreme possibilities. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to get ready for environmental results they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Range of Harsh Climate Projections
Another collection of severe models maps the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the year 2100. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while rainfall could be 300% of standard measurements.
The chance of the extreme scenarios coming to pass remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what measures will be enacted to combat climate change and how the Earth's systems will react. This analysis was compared to security threat evaluations or scenario planning for financial systems.
Key Scenario Elements
- Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action breaks down or if powerful amplifying effects such as the Amazon basin dying emit its huge repository of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heatwaves and dry spells hitting the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to ocean warming. This work was requested as part of a government’s adaptation planning initiative. Earlier reports have stated that not enough attention was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
Official experts has recommended that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and assess the risks for four degrees. Past policy documents have been criticised as being "inadequate" by certain experts.
