Prison Shock: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison
He contested justice and justice triumphed.
A couple of months following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems headed to prison.
Imminent Incarceration
The found-guilty coup-monger – who has been subject to home confinement in his mansion while a series of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst mounting talk that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security prison.
Past Statements on Prisoners
Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the conservative ex- soldier exhibited scant mercy for the country's prison population.
“For what reason must we give those lowlifes a good life?” he previously wondered. “They should just get screwed, period. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to finish there, the only thing required is not rape, abduction or theft.”
Incarceration Destination Discussion
Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, several of whom this week visited the facility in an apparent bid to dissuade the judiciary from banishing him there.
Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, claimed he anticipated the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious gut ailments – the outcome of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 election race – meant it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His health is highly critical. He cannot to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the standard of prison meals.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells accommodating 40 prisoners: “That is practically one square metre per inmate.
“We conversed to the prisoners and they protest, of course, of the terrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.
Backers React
He is not the only voice voicing opinions before the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.
Authoring in a major publication, another ally, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the greatest wrong in its past”.
“This is an injustice that erodes the spirits of countless of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.
Mixed General Response
This could be true considering the considerable following Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. However his expected jailing has also pleased the feelings of numerous other people who feel he ought to be imprisoned for plotting to prevent his successor from taking power – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting leader's political party, said: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to get proper handling – but dignified treatment behind bars. He must not persist being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years applauding the tough handling of inmates, had abruptly realized to their rights. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly argued that human rights are not for offenders – opted to visit a penitentiary to discover what conditions are actually like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, demeaning treatment”.
Likely Jail Conditions
Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of detainees, his probable location appears to be a close penitentiary for law enforcement and other “particular” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro had while residing in the spectacular official residence, around 12 miles away.
As per sources, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – approximately the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter terrace. “He could be authorized to have a TV and also a cooler in his quarters as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report suggested.
Political Reactions
Senator Lucas denounced the talked-about proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his outcome in the {
