Premier League Updates: Palmer Poised for Chelsea Comeback; Idrissa Gueye's Unsuccessful Red Card Appeal Mystery
1. Key Player Palmer Available for Important London Clash with Arsenal
The Blues manager Enzo Maresca stated on Friday that Cole Palmer is set to return for the team's important top-flight match against London rivals Arsenal.
The young English midfielder was out of action due to a broken toe sustained after an unfortunate incident.
“He is available to start and to play,” Maresca commented. “The whole team is delighted.”
This season, Palmer has made only four appearances across all competitions, scoring twice.
After joining from Manchester City in 2023, he has achieved 45 goals and 29 assists in 101 games for the London club.
“He is our best player, we are delighted he is back, we need to give him time to be fully fit,” Maresca added. “He has been brilliant historically and no doubt he is going to do very good for this club in the future.”
2. Everton Receive No Explanation for Failed Gueye Dismissal Appeal
Everton have failed in their appeal against Idrissa Gueye's sending off for a physical confrontation with teammate Michael Keane during the team's narrow win at Manchester United.
The 36-year-old Senegalese midfielder was dismissed just early on into the match after hitting Keane during a disagreement over a misplaced pass.
The player promptly expressed regret, and the pair were seen making up afterwards in a mock social media video.
However, the challenge against the dismissal was rejected, and Gueye must serve a three-game ban, leaving Everton depleted for their upcoming match against Newcastle United.
“We lodged an appeal and it was unsuccessful,” manager the manager said. “We haven’t been given any reason why it was turned down but we did appeal it.”
Inquired about more issues from the event, Moyes added: “It was over immediately, it was done, that was it, we progressed quite quickly and it was all sorted within the team environment.”
3. Wissa Trains with The Magpies for Initial Session since Setback
Newcastle United's recent acquisition Yoane Wissa has practiced with his new teammates for the first time since sustaining a knee injury soon after his arrival from his former club in the autumn.
Manager Eddie Howe confirmed the development on the end of the week but did not disclose a possible comeback timeline for the 29-year-old.
The team signed the striker for a significant fee to replace Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool for a British record sum.
Unfortunately, Wissa was injured while on international service before he could play his first game for Newcastle.
“He is doing well, he trained with us for the first time on midweek, so I was extremely satisfied with how he looked,” Howe said. “That’s his first time competitively with the group. Let’s see how he responds today.”
Howe added: “There is a planned comeback timeline, but it’s probably best if I withhold that information. We don’t want to disappoint anyone. Naturally, we want to include him as soon as possible.”
In other news, Kieran Trippier will be sidelined for a four-week period with a hamstring injury.
Fourth Story: Liverpool' Poor Form ‘Irrelevant’, Says West Ham Boss Nuno
West Ham United head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that the reigning champions' dip in performance “doesn’t really matter” as his side gets ready to face the ailing top-flight title holders.
The Liverpool manager's side has suffered six losses in seven recent Premier League matches, falling out of the upper half of the table.
Nevertheless, Nuno emphasized that there can be no complacency when the teams meet on the weekend at the their home ground.
“Liverpool is a good team and in football, what counts is what you do on the day,” Nuno remarked. “We are preparing to play the title winners, players that are skilled and able of doing good things, so we have to get ready.
“The history of the results before, the performance of the teams, is not that important. It is about the match day. Aware that we are going to face a excellent team, that has players capable of doing wonderful things, so we have to be fully prepared, to compete.”
West Ham will welcome back Lucas Paquetá after his ban, while Crysencio Summerville and Dinos Mavropanos are stepping up their return from fitness issues.
Fifth Story: Morgan Gibbs-White in Contention for Nottingham Forest against The Seagulls
Nottingham Forest's manager Sean Dyche is optimistic that Morgan Gibbs-White will be fit for the team's home match against Brighton on Sunday.
The England international missed the midweek European match against Malmö due to a back issue.
“Hopefully it’s settling down,” Dyche said as he got ready to face Fabian Hürzeler's side, who have secured seven points from their past three matches.
“It’s like a bad back, but a waking-up sort of injury, one where you just sleep funny or move improperly. So we’re not anticipating, at this stage anyway, that it’s too serious and it’s easing already. So we’re confident that it’ll be fine for the weekend.”
Murillo was feeling his hamstring muscle after the comfortable European victory, but Dyche said the player “is expected to be okay”.
Meanwhile, the full-back (thigh injury), the midfielder (thigh), the winger (hamstring), Chris Wood (knee), and the defender (hip) are expected to miss out.
6. Glasner: European Loss Will Not Hinder Palace
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner believes that the setback of midweek's European loss to Strasbourg is a sign of how far the club has come in challenging on two fronts.
The FA Cup winners took the lead at Stade de la Meinau through Tyrick Mitchell's first-half goal but were pegged back by the opposition manager's side, who climbed to second in the group standings.
The Eagles now return to domestic action with a home fixture against Manchester United, and Glasner is optimistic his team can keep up their push for a top four place.
“Similar to the late loss against Everton, it just feels that it was totally avoidable and it is our fault,” Glasner remarked. “Alternatively, we have to accept it. The commitment was there but it is a game we shouldn’t definitely lose.”
Glasner confirmed that Borna Sosa would miss out for Sunday's match after he stayed behind to France, but Will Hughes, who was substituted during the opening period against Strasbourg, should be in the team selection.
