New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
