New York Introduces Reporting Tool for Citizens to Report Immigration Videos After Detentions of 4 American Citizens

New York state AG has rolled out a recent reporting form asking locals to submit photos and videos of ICE operations around the state. This move follows a shortly after a high-profile ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting mass protests.

American Citizens Detained In Raid

A lawmaker disclosed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were detained and detained for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations erupted in the city on consecutive evenings.

"Each citizen has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG stated in a release.

"Anyone who observed and documented ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to share that material with us. We are pledged to examining these submissions and investigating any legal breaches."

Submission Process

The portal includes options to upload photos and videos of the raid, along with a section to note location information. Before submitting, users must tick a option that confirms that "authorities could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or government document."

Information about the ICE Action

The Chinatown raid, which observers say included over fifty federal agents, occurred in a famous area of NYC where fake products and merchandise are commonly traded in large quantities – frequently to visitors.

Recordings of the incident reveal numerous masked and armed personnel restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of locals trailed the personnel along the roads. An military-style transport was noticed rolling through the city streets.

Political Response

At a midweek briefing held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be taken for unjustly." He clarified the persons were released on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman stated. "This represents a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is simply a justification to provoke conflict for the government to bring in the troops to stop conflict that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the ICE raid rapidly grew – every political contenders condemned the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the federal government opts for authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, rather than security. It has to end," a political candidate declared.

The city's immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.

"Federal officers targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, masked agents and protective equipment to focus on street vendors trying to make a living. This raid had no connection to citizen protection and everything to do with intimidating residents and areas," remarked the leader of a rights organization.

Official Guidelines

ICE policy forbids the arrest of American nationals and the agency has stated it does not take into custody American nationals. However, investigative journalism has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the start of the existing leadership.

Ongoing Trend

Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in NY and across the US this year.

A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the current administration. Rallies targeting ICE are ubiquitous along with accusations of violence and abusive practices.

Latest, a submission provided by advocacy organizations claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
