The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
