Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
